The Matrix-6R is the 3U rackmount version of the Matrix-6 keyboard. It is a six-voice, bitimbral analogue (DCO, VCF) unit with an extensive modulation matrix.

I basically consider the Matrix-6 and 6R to be lower-quality cousins of the Xpander and Matrix-12. In particular, on my unit the tuning was rather rough, as was the filtering. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and the machine can make some startling sounds, but I didn't consider the tolerances fine enough. The Xpander is a higher-quality machine, but since I personally don't like the Oberheim sound much, I've never seriously considered buying one.

The Matrix-1000 is a single rackspace version of the Matrix-6R. It is monotimbral only, with a single mono audio out. (The 6R has a mono out for each of the two tones.) The '1000 cannot be programmed from the front panel; instead, it is generally considered a preset machine, with 800 ROM patches (good ones, I am told) and 200 RAM patches which can be reprogrammed.
